Green and Golden Bell Tadpoles and Frogs Care Sheet

Green and Golden Bell Tadpoles and Frogs Care Sheet

Green and Golden Bells are a stunning frog known for their bright vibrant colouring. Males can get up to 8cm in size and females up to 10cm. They can live for up to 15 years in captivity.

Tadpoles are usually available from late Spring to late Summer. Tadpoles can take around 12 weeks to morph from eggs into froglets however if they are too late in the season it can take a year.

Tadpoles:

Tadpoles need to be kept in Coldwater with the chlorine removed. Using Seachem Prime will be prefect for this. It is ideal that there is a filter of some sort in the tank to help clean waste and provide oxygen. Tadpoles need to be kept in water until their back legs develop then the water needs to be reduced and more land available to them.

Enclosure:

The minimum size enclosure for 2 Green and Golden Bell frogs is 60cm long by 30cm wide but bigger is always better making sure there is plenty of ventilation. 1/3 of the enclosure needs to be a water area at least deep enough for them to fully submerge. Easy access out of water is essential especially for young frogs so creating a slopping area is great.

You can use river sand and or large river stones as a substrate as well as sphagnum moss and terrarium potted plants. Driftwood keeps it realistic looking like their natural environment and provides places for them to climb and hide.

These frogs will darken in colour in the colder months or if in a dark environment. You will need to use a UVB light during the day to imitate the sun, a crucial part to the health of any frog and will help them to absorb calcium. We also recommend using a heat lamp to encourage basking. Having a heat mat under the water side will help to maintain a warmer water temperature. You can use a heater, but they do take up space.

Food:

Tadpoles can eat fish flakes and will eat waste off the ground and graze on decaying plant matter.

Frogs will eat most things that move such as flies, Live crickets, locusts, mealworms, slaters, moths and so on. Don’t be alarmed if they do not eat straight after getting their back legs as they absorb their tails which can take time. Please note it is not uncommon for frogs to eat anything smaller than themselves so if introducing a new frog make sure it is around the same size. This usually only happens if there is not enough food supply.

Important:

You cannot keep Green and Golden Bell frogs and Whistling tree frogs together. They require different care, and it is not uncommon for frogs to eat anything smaller than themselves.
