Introducing New Fish Care Sheet
When introducing any new fish to your aquarium it is important to float the bag in your aquarium for 20-30 mins to allow them to adjust to the new water temperature. After this time, open the fish bag and add one cup of your aquarium water to the bag and let it sit for another 10 mins to adjust again. This process can be repeated another few times. Finally, using a fish net, scoop out the fish and add these directly to your aquarium. It is also recommended to turn off any aquarium lighting to reduce stress to the fish.
Best practice when adding to an established aquarium, is to set up a quarantine tank and keep fish in there for 2-4 weeks to monitor for illness. We would never sell a fish if we suspected of illness, however whilst a fish may appear healthy, it can take time for illness to present itself.
It is important not to overload your aquarium with too many fish at one time as this can crash your aquarium leading to illness or death. It is best just to add a few each week, giving your bio filter time to adjust.
Having a cycled tank is preferred for adding fish to a new aquarium however not 100% necessary when using Seachem Stability as this helps to cycle your aquarium quickly and makes the water safe to add fish straight away. We only recommend adding a few fish at a time if doing it this way. If you have any concerns about your water quality, you can get test kits which check the water parameters that affect the health of fish. If you are local we are happy to do this free of charge in store.
It is really important that you make sure you are choosing fish that are compatible with your aquarium size and any fish you already have in there. Not all fish species get along with each other, and many require different care. We recommend doing your research before purchasing any new fish and please ask any questions as we are here to help you make the best decision.
